The new ballfields at the town park in Calverton will be open in time for summer, according to Supervisor Sean Walter.
The Town Board this week authorized covenants required by the county health department to obtain the health department’s approval of temporary toilet facilities on the site. The town is still working with the state transportation department to obtain permission to open an entrance to the park on Route 25.
In other action at its regular monthly meeting this week, the Town Board:
• authorized a public hearing on a zone change petition by the developer of Aquebogue Mews, seeking to expand the Hamlet Center zoning use district on the north side of Route 25, east of Edgar Avenue in Aquebogue. The property is currently zoned “Hamlet Residential.” The Town Board will hold a public hearing on the zone change petition June 2 at 2:10 p.m.;
• approved amendments to the Industrial C zoning use district to add manufacturing as a permitted use;
• adopted a capital budget for the repair of River Road in Calverton, which suffered a collapse following the March 30-31 rainstorm;
• formally asked the state to transfer title to the state armory facility on Route 58 to the town for use as a police station/justice court complex; and
• issued a request for proposals for the operation of the town’s animal shelter; proposals are due by May 21.
Supervisor Sean Walter commended Riverhead Town Justice Allen Smith on his election by the Suffolk County Criminal Bar Association as “judge of the year.” It was the first time a town justice ever received the honor, Walter said.
Municipal garage mechanic Michael Curtis (center, in red shirt) was honored as employee of the quarter by the town’s labor-management committee. He received a proclamation from the Town Board declaring May 3, 2010 “Michael Curtis Day” in the Town of Riverhead.
