Ellie Markewitz, Salutatorian of the Class of 2010, will atend the University of Maryland and plans to major in mathematics and education.

Ellie is finishing her four-year academic career at Riverhead High second to only one other student in her class of 333.

Ellie radiates youthful enthusiasm, intelligence, and charm. She is energetic, fun, loving, and outgoing. She is also very bright and an excellent musician and athlete. Her list of accomplishments is long and varied.

Ellie is a scholar in the best sense of the word and has won many awards. She is a member of the National Latin Honor Society, the National Honor Society, the National Society of High School Scholars, participated in and won Honorable Mention at the Latin Declamatio, and was the Chemistry Department’s Outstanding Scholar of the Year.

Ellie is a proven leader. She is a member of Leader’s Club, Interact, Leo’s Club, was on the Yearbook Committee, and attended the National Young Leaders Conference.

She is also an excellent musician earning the Outstanding Scholar of the Year Award in Music in 2007-08. She plays clarinet in the pep band, concert band, and the orchestra and participated in the All-County, HMEA, and North Fork Music Festivals.

In addition to her academic acumen, musical ability, and leadership skills, Ellie is an outstanding athlete. She was on the girls’ varsity basketball team, which won a league championship. She also played all four years on the varsity soccer team (MVP, Scholar Athlete, and All-Conference), is a member of the winter varsity track team (All-League, Scholar Athlete, All-County and State Team), and is fit enough to win the Presidential Fitness Award.

Her spirit and willingness to help others is indefatigable. Her list of community service contributions includes: the Wave-to-Wave track and soccer mentoring program, English tutoring, the Autism Walk-A-Thon, the Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society Car Wash, Community Cleanup, Christmas caroling, Eyeglass Collection, volunteering for the March of Dimes, and much, much more.

I loved going to school in Riverhead,” states Ellie enthusiastically. “I loved the diversity of the student body, the excellence of the teaching staff, and all my wonderful friends. And now, I’m excited about going to college, and perhaps becoming a math teacher myself.”
