An air quality health advisory has been issued for Long Island and the New York City metro area for Wednesday.

Ground-level ozone levels are expected to exceed levels considered healthy due to the high heat predicted in the area on Wednesday.

When pollution levels are elevated, individuals should consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects, according to the state health department. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease.

Ground-level ozone is a major component of smog. Automobile exhaust and out-of-state emission sources are the primary causes of ground level ozone and are the most serious air pollution problems in the northeast.

The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. through 11 p.m. Wednesday.
