Riverhead Police Department was awarded last week for its traffic safety initiatives by the American Automobile Association (AAA).

The association handed out 46 traffic safety awards this year to communities in its northeast region, which includes New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Riverhead received a silver award for its “many traffic safety initiatives,” according to AAA Northeast, including the town’s efforts to encourage seatbelt usage, provide bicycle safety education and curtail incidents of drivers under the influence.

One of Riverhead’s own police officers, Timothy Murphy, has regularly earned a top spot in Suffolk County’s annual list of officers who make the most DWI arrests county-wide.

Award winners in the New York metropolitan area were honored during a luncheon ceremony on October 15 in East Meadow.

Garden City, New York City, Northport, Port Washington and White Plains won the assocation’s top award for their traffic safety programs.
