A Bellport man was arrested today in connection with gunshots fired in the TGI Friday’s parking lot in November.

Riverhead police said they charged Xavier Cancel, 20, with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and reckless endangerment in the second degree in the Nov. 26 incident. Cancel fired several shots from a handgun with bullets hitting the restaurant building and an unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot, police said.

Cancel was in custody in the Suffolk County Correctional Facility at the time of his arrest, police said. He was arraigned in Riverhead Justice Court where bail was set at $25,000. After arraignment, he was transported back to the jail where is incarcerated on an unrelated matter, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
