The Riverhead Cardboard Boat race has been postponed.
The annual event, which had been set for Sunday, June 26, won’t take place that day because the tide will be too low that afternoon — and concerns about water quality.
Supervisor Sean Walter says he’s also concerned about the overall health of the river currently. The presence of mahogany tide in the river has him worried about another fish kill, he said. Today at the Town Board’s work session, Walter advocated postponing the event to a date later in the summer.
Board members did not decide on an alternate date because they need to coordinate with the committee of volunteers that’s been organizing the event since its inception.
“There are still so many bunker in the river,” Water said. “If there’s a heavy rain and a lotof runoff, we could still have a problem with another kill.”
Before any other dates are considered, organizers must consult the tide tables and make sure the timing is right, the supervisor said.
“I hate to say it, but it is possible we may not be able to have the race this year if the volunteers and the tides and the water quality don’t align,” Walter said.
