A report of a possible missing paraglider triggered an overnight search of the Long Island Sound off the coast of Southold and Riverhead towns.

A person near Kenny’s Beach in Southold reported seeing a what looked like a paraglider enter the water last night at around 9 p.m., according to the U.S. Coast Guard public affairs office.

Late last night and through early this morning, an air crew aboard a helicopter searched a broad swath of the Sound, from Southold to Wading River, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier said this morning.

At first light, a fixed-wing aircraft joined the search, he said.

The search turned up no evidence of the paraglider, Strohmaier said.

“Usually if a craft like that enters the water, there will be some debris in the water, but they didn’t see anything,” he said. Both aircraft have since returned to their base in Cape Cod.

“At this point, nothing has been confirmed,” he said. The Coast Guard is checking to see if there are any missing person reports.

Southold Police marine units joined the search, Strohmaier said.
