Drive-in movies will continue at Riverhead Raceway this weekend and next.
The Town Board this afternoon approved the addition of two more Friday evening shows. The raceway is seeking approval to show outdoor movies every Friday through Labor Day weekend, but the board, which previously approved the first two performances, would only agree to two more.
The second of the first two movie nights, set for July 1, was canceled due to rain. The debut, on June 17, saw some 178 cars enter the raceway’s back lot for a showing of “Big.”
“Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” will be showing on the big outdoor screen this week, Frank Zagarino of Movies in the Moonlight said this afternoon.
“Talladega Nights” stars Will Ferrell as one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history, who hits some bumpy asphalt in the road of life.
“I heard their first one was almost a sellout and we had no complaints,” Councilman John Dunleavy said before casting his vote to authorize the next two shows.
In other action at this afternoon’s meeting, the Town Board:
- scheduled a July 19 (2:05 p.m.) public hearing on a proposed water rate increase for the Riverhead Water District;
- authorized a stipulation of discontinuance ending the longstanding lawsuit of F1 Long Island against the Town of Riverhead on terms not immediately disclosed by the town. More than a decade ago, F1 proposed a go kart track on a 12 acre site in Calverton;
- accepted the retirement of longtime town engineer Ken Testa, effective July 25.
The board also approved special event permits for the following:
- Jamesport Fire Department Carnival July 13 through July 16, with fireworks on July 16;
- Family Community Life Center Family Fun Day on property located at 1018 Northville Turnpike on July 30;
- Riverhead Free Library 120th birthday celebration on July 23;
- Country Festival at the 4H Camp on Sound Avenue July 29-31;
- McGann-Mercy High School 5K run on Oct. 1.
