An air quality health advisory has again been issued for Long Island, New York City and the lower Hudson Valley today for the pollutant ground-level ozone. The ozone advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. through 10 p.m.
State officials issued the alert because ozone is expected to exceed the air quality index of 100 in the NYC metro region. That level is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.
Ozone is a major component of photochemical smog, which can have adverse health effects, especially for young children and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma.
When pollution levels are elevated the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young and those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician.
