A man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after a single-car crash on Middle Country Road in Calverton this afternoon.

The westbound vehicle, which witnesses said was traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed the eastbound lane of travel just west of Manor Road and Splish-Splash Drive at about 3:30 p.m., hit a berm, went airborne and crashed into the woods, according to emergency officials. The car rolled over multiple times. The driver kicked out the windshield and fled the scene on foot. He was found unconscious in a field about a half-mile from the scene.

Riverhead Police are investigating the accident and did not provide any additional information.
