A Flanders man who police say attempted to steal tires and rims from an unregistered car parked at a Route 58 business this morning has been charged with attempted grand larceny, according to a Riverhead Town Police press release.
Police said they responded to a report of the attempted larceny today at 3:50 a.m., when witnesses reported seeing a 2014 Chevy Silverado with one of its rear tires and rims removed. They also reported a suspicious person at the location, 1309 Old Country Road, and said he fled the scene in a vehicle, according to the police report.
The vehicle was located a short distance from the scene with the assistance of New York State Police. It was operated by Anthony Murphy,34, of Flanders, police said. After further investigation, police said, it was determined that Murphy had attempted to remove the passenger side tires and rims from the Silverado.
Murphy was arrested on charges of attempted grand larceny in the fourth degree and possession of burglar’s tools, police said.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
