Retiring teachers, staff members and trustee Kimberly Ligon were honored last night at the Riverhead Board of Education meeting.
Ligon, who has served two terms on the board, decided to step down at the end of her current term, which expires June 30. She will be replaced on the board by Therese Zuhoski, who was elected to a three-year term last month.
Also recognized by the board last night were the following retirees:
Mary Lee Olsen, high school business teacher, after 20 years;
Ilene Chfetz, elementary teacher, after 34 years;
Janet Kantor, speech teacher, after 29 years;
Dorothea “Dee” Martin, elementary teacher, after 25 years;
Patricia Passanante, mathematics teacher, after 28 years;
Theresa Carr, mathematics teacher, after 28 years;
Sandra Kolbo, graphics materials designer;
Diane Janos, teaching assistant, after 34 years;
Joseph Spano, school bus monitor, after 14 years;
Adele Abrahamsen, school bus driver, after 17 years;
Kathleen Hamilton, clerk typist, after 32 years.
The board also made the following tenure appointments last night:
Arlene Durkaslski, director of personnel;
Magdalena Babicz, special education teacher;
Kelly Dillon, elementary teacher;
Lori Falisi, english teacher;
Leyda Flores, ESL teacher
Jeremy Garritano, special education teacher;
Roberta MacGray, family and consumer science teacher;
Shannan Maida, special education teacher.
