A power outage left around 2,600 customers in the vicinity of Route 58 without power for at least two hours Wednesday, according to police and PSEG Long Island.
Numerous businesses along the western portion of the Route 58 corridor were affected, including Tanger Outlet Mall and the Walmart and Home Depot shopping centers. The traffic lights at the intersections of Rt. 58/Kroemer Avenue and Rt. 58/Mill Road were also affected by the outage, requiring Riverhead Police to direct traffic at those intersections.
Most of Mill Road and a portion of Route 25 were also affected by the outage, temporarily forcing the Riverhead Post Office to close.
The outage triggered numerous automatic alarms at businesses in Route 58 corridor, leaving firefighters “scrambling from place to place” to respond to the alarms, according to Riverhead Fire Department Chief Kevin Brooks.
As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, the lights were beginning to come back on in businesses and homes in the affected area. A PSEG spokesperson could not immediately explain the cause of the outage.
