(Updated: Sept. 3, 4:55 a.m.) A two-year old boy died after being struck by a car in Wading River late Saturday afternoon.
The injured child was taken by Wading River Fire Department ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, Riverhead Town Police said in a press release late last night.
The accident took place in the “Oakwood on the Sound” community at about 4:40 p.m. Police said the child, of Astoria, Queens, was playing in a yard on Locust Road when he ran into the roadway and was struck by a 2015 Audi Q7 operated by Laura J. Russo of Old Field.
Riverhead Town Police called in the New York State Police accident reconstruction unit to assist Riverhead detectives with the investigation.
The vehicle was impounded for safety checks.
The investigation is ongoing and any witnesses are asked to contact the Riverhead Town Police at 631-727-4500 ext. 326. All calls will be confidential, police said.
