Riverhead Varsity Cheerleading will once again head to Florida this spring for the National High School Cheerleading Championship after they placed first at a regional competition Saturday.

The cheerleading team took first place in a competition at Nassau County Community College, coming out on top against schools from across Long Island.

Their performance earned them a spot at the National High School Cheerleading Championship at Walt Disney World in February.

Last year’s team made school history at the national championships, making it to the finals for the first time ever. Riverhead placed 15th at that competition.

The national championship will take place on February 10 and 11 at Walt Disney World.

The school district’s other cheerleading teams also had a strong showing in their own Section IX competitions this weekend. Junior varsity placed third in a competition in Newfield, and Riverhead Middle School’s cheerleading team placed fourth at a competition in Mount Sinai.
