George William Verity of Calverton, formerly of Cutchogue, died of congestive heart failure on Jan. 31, 2018. He was 87 years old.
He was born on October 12, 1930 to Sam and Grace Margarite Verity in Greenport, New York.
He attended school in Greenport and began working at a young age with his father on the water, crabbing and eeling.
He served as a medical services specialist in the U.S. Air Force at Francis E. Warren Air Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming from 1951 to 1955. He married Francis (Nabrezny) on December 4, 1954. Starting in 1956, George worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Research Center on Plum Island until his retirement in January 1988 as an operation and maintenance mechanic.
He had an ability to fix, build, and create anything which contributed to his retirement profession, yard maintenance. He was a collector of many interests and a familiar face at area yard sales along with his wife.
Predeceased by his wife Francis in 2004, he is survived by his children George (Maria) of Port Charlotte, Florida and Laurie (Gary [deceased]) Chapman of Colchester, Connecticut, his grandsons Kevin Chapman (Michael Sutherland) of Middletown, Connecticut, Michael (Ashley) Chapman of Naugatuck, Connecticut and Steve Liberty of Colchester, Connecticut and his and great-grandchildren Landon and Harper. He also leaves behind his beloved four-legged companion, Toby Cat.
The family received friends on Friday, February 2 at the McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass was Saturday, February 3 at Our Lady of Ostrabrama Church in Cutchogue. Burial followed in Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.
