A crash involving a school bus transporting Riverhead High School students to Eastern Suffolk BOCES in Bellport sent several students to the hospital this morning, a Suffolk County Police Department spokesperson confirmed today.
The accident between the full-size school bus carrying 30 students and a Jeep occurred around 8 a.m. on East Woodside Avenue in North Bellport, according to a statement from Riverhead Central School District.
Seven students were transported to Long Island Medical Center in East Patchogue for treatment of minor injuries, the district said.
The crash occurred at the intersection of East Woodside Avenue with Sawgrass. The bus was westbound on Woodside when an eastbound Jeep attempted to make a U-turn at the intersection and it was struck by the bus, police said.
East Woodside Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions from Station Road to Horseblock Road, police said.
The accident is under investigation.
