Apple Honda has earned an environmental leadership award from American Honda Motor Co. for its new facility on Route 58.
The Riverhead dealership was presented with Honda’s platinum award in environmental leadership for building a facility that incorporates environmental best practices into its design. These include an energy efficient HVAC system, dual-pane/tinted windows and insulation, efficient lighting systems and automatic controls, and reduction and recycling systems and programs.
The platinum level award is the highest level attainable in Honda’s environmental leadership program, a national voluntary program launched in 2012 to help Honda dealers reduce their building-related carbon footprint.
Since the program’s inception, Honda Green Dealers have collectively reduced their CO2 output by approximately 34,000 metric tons and cumulatively saved $7.5 million in energy costs, according to the manufacturer.
Apply Honda founder Irwin Garsten, who died at age 86 last year before the new facility was completed, insisted that the dealership did everything possible to attain the distinction, according to Linda Hulse, assistant to Apple Honda vice president and general manager Bill Fields. Herbert Israel of Diamond Builders, was “a huge part of putting it all together,” Hulse said.
