Jane Elizabeth Gonsalves Haas of Southold, a former longtime resident of Mattituck, died at home on April 11, 2018 after a struggle with dementia. She was 83 years old.

She was born on April 21, 1934 to Thomas and Virginia (McCay) Gonsalves. She grew up in Baldwin, attended Catholic schools all her life and was the valedictorian of Ladycliff College in Highland, New York.

She was married to John Haas for 50 years. Predeceased by her daughter Gretchen, she is survived by her children Suzanne (Bill) Connell of Mattituck, Eric (Cinda) of Solomons, Maryland, Gordon of East Marion, Karen (Steve Cielatka) of Cutchogue, Virginia (Tom) Beebe of Cutchogue, Elaine of Mattituck and Katherine of Cutchogue. Known as “Mimi” to her 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, she was a homemaker whose family and faith were the centerpiece and anchor of her life, her family said.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 13 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning, April 14 at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck.
