Riverhead Middle School musicians earned numerous accolades for their performances at the annual Music in the Parks competition, held at Six Flags New England in Agawam, Massachusetts, on April 28.
The middle school wind ensemble, chamber orchestra, jazz band and show choir took home first-place honors in their individual categories; the jazz band and chamber orchestra each received a rating of excellent, while the wind ensemble and show choir obtained scores of superior and best overall. Additionally, show choir member Johanna Governali won a medal as best vocal soloist.
The middle schoolers were also honored with the festival’s Esprit de Corps Award, which recognizes students who exhibit an exemplary attitude of positive support and outstanding personal, social and musical behavior.
“This was an amazing opportunity for the students,” said Lauren Lewonka, director of fine arts at Riverhead Central School District. “In addition to awarding them beautiful trophies, the Music in the Parks program provided our students with suggestions for musical growth and improvement.”
