Joseph Peters of Riverhead, formerly of Mattituck, died on Sept. 6, 2018. He was 89 years old.
Joseph Peters of Riverhead and Naples, Florida died at Acadia Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Riverhead on Sept. 6, 2018. He was 89 years old.
He was born on Feb. 3, 1929 in Brooklyn to Charles and Louise Pietromartire and later attended Bayside High School, St. John’s University and Hunter College where he received his master’s degree.
From 1953 to 1954, he served as a corporal in the U.S. Army where he taught mathematics.
On July 8, 1978, he married the former Carol Attanasi and together they made their home in Mattituck for many years.
He was a teacher in the Hampton Bays Union Free School District, a communicant and usher at Sacred Heart Parish and a past-president of the Mattituck Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife Carol, two children Lisa Peters of the Dominican Republic and Jeffrey Peters of Hollis, New Hampshire, two grandchildren Molly and Nathan Peters and nieces and nephews in Mattituck, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The family will receive friends on Sept. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Sept. 10 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church. Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt will officiate. Interment, with U.S. Army honors, will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery
