It’s time for one more massive book giveaway in Riverhead on Saturday.

Local students will get the chance to browse through thousands of free books at the “Final Book Giveaway,” as Saturday’s book fair has been dubbed, an event sponsored by the Riverhead Central Faculty Association and the Parent-Teacher-Student Organization.

The book giveaway is made possible thanks to First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides new books and learning materials to children in need. The free books are provided through the First Book National Book Bank.

Publishers sell and donate books and resources to First Book for donation to organizations serving children that meet First Book’s eligibility criteria, including districts like Riverhead that have Title I schools. First Book member organizations pay only the cost of shipping.

On Saturday about 5,000 books will be piled high on tables in the Pulaski Street School auditorium,
Riverhead High School PTSO president Mary Maki said.

The book fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Maki said books were selected for children in all grades in the district, from pre-K to 12, and they cover a variety of topics. There will also be books in Spanish available.

“It’s a wonderful program for the entire district. It meets the needs of students in every grade and will help us reach the literacy goals for the district,” Maki said.

Any remaining books on hand after Saturday’s fair will be given to classrooms at no cost to the school or the taxpayer, said Maki.

There will also be a raffle for a tablet at Saturday’s event. Raffle tickets will be on sale at the event: three tickets for $5.

Cookies will also be served, Maki said.

“We are really hoping for the community to come out and join us on Saturday. This is a wonderful event that helps all children,” she said.
