Mary Ann Galterio of South Jamesport died Jan. 5, 2019. She was 101 years old.

She was born Nov. 4, 1917, in Philadelphia to Margaret and Charles Linn.

In 1940, Mary graduated from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, where she was president of her class.

During World War II, she was a captain in the Army Nurse Corps. She was stationed at an evacuation hospital in the South Pacific island of New Caledonia off the coast of Australia. In early 1942, she was chosen to work on the hospital ship USS Solace.

In 1946, she married Mario V. Galterio and they raised their children in Garden City. She worked as a nurse at South Nassau Communities Hospital. The couple moved to South Jamesport in 1980.

Predeceased by her husband in 1992, Mary is survived by her children Catherine (Terrance) Moran, Vincent (Deborah) Pirozzi and Joanne (Ronald) Giacone; grandchildren, Francis, Genevieve, John, Nicholas and Katherine; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Jan. 8, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Calverton National Cemetery.
