A small plane has crashed in a field north of Sound Avenue near the Riverhead-Southold town line.

The plane went down at about 9:15 this morning and became engulfed in flames upon contact with the ground.

Two occupants of the plane are believed dead within its cabin, according to police radio reports. Police believe the plane took off from MacArthur airport.

Jamesport Fire Department is at the scene.

Police later determined that the location of the crash was in Southold Town.

Sound Avenue was initially closed between Herricks Lane and Aldrich Lane but as of 9:55 a.m. has been reopened.
