A Baiting Hollow boater and his passenger were rescued in the Long Island Sound by Southold Police yesterday after his vessel began sinking off Cabots Woods Road in Peconic, Southold Police said in a press release last night.
Police said Alex Palencia, 37, called 911 yesterday to report his boat was sinking and that he and a passenger, who had life jackets on, were entering the water. There were heavy west winds and 2-4 foot seas at the time, according to the report, which did not provide the time of the incident.
A Southold Police bay constable was on patrol in Mattituck Creek and responded to the scene and with the help of police officers on shore, spotted the two people in the water, according to the police report. They were brought on to the vessel safely transported by police to the Mattituck DEC boat ramp at Matttiuck Inlet, police said. Both refused medical attention. Sea Tow was contacted by the owner to help retrieve the boat, police said.
