Riverhead Police are investigating a man’s death in a motor vehicle accident on Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow last night.
The driver of an SUV that struck a utility pole on Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow last night was pronounced dead at Peconic Bay Medical Center. His female passenger suffered injuries police said were not life-threatening.
Police responded to a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle accident at 9:36 p.m. Friday. Responding officers found a mid-sized SUV struck a utility pole on the north side of the roadway in front of 1507 Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow, according to a police press release issued early this morning.
Officers found the vehicle occupied by an unconscious male operator and a conscious female passenger, according to the report. CPR was in progress as police and EMTs arrived on scene, police said.
The operator was transported by Wading River Fire Department Rescue to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead by PBMC medical personnel, police said. Wading River ambulance also transported the passenger to PBMC for treatment.
Police did not release the names of the victims or provide any further information about the incident.
The Riverhead Police Department detective division is investigating the crash. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Anyone that may have witnessed the incident is asked to call the Riverhead Detective Division at 631-727-4500.
