William Conklin of Riverhead died Aug. 10, 2019 at Peconic Bay Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility in Riverhead. He was 87 years old.

Born on Feb. 23, 1932 in Greenport, he was the son of Duane V. And Helen (Laux) Conklin.

He was a graduate of Riverhead High School and served in the U.S. Navy.

He owned Long Island Ice and Fuel in Riverhead.

Conklin, a lifelong Riverhead resident, was an ex-chief of the Riverhead Fire Department and a former Riverhead Fire District commissioner.

He enjoyed polka music, the Riverhead Iron Men drill team and softball.

Predeceased by his wife Mary (Needs) Conklin, he is survived by his daughter, Candee Bouchard, his sons Kyle Conklin and Chris Conklin, his daughter, Kelly Conklin Penwell and his domestic parnter, Fran Alec. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive visitors on Monday, Aug. 12 from 4to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Isidore’s R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery in Riverhead.

Memorial donations may be made to Operation International or Riverhead Fire Department.
