Former Riverhead resident Betty L. McCabe of Eastport died Aug. 13, 2019, at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue. She was 81.
She was born Nov. 23, 1937, in Westhampton to Joseph and Mary Ann (Block) Strebel and graduated from Riverhead High School, where she received journalism awards.
She worked at the original Riverhead Grill, where family members said she loved her customers. She then became senior clerk typist at the Suffolk County Department of Labor, which she retired from in 2012.
She was a member of the Jamesport Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and was a Suffolk County Girl Scout leader.
Family members said she was an avid reader and enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles.
She is survived by her son, Raymond Jr. of; daughter, Diane; son-in-law John; daughter Karen, son Robert and daughter-in-law Vicki; sisters, Mary Ann Kruszon, Elizabeth Strebel and Josephine Prudenti; grandchildren, Ray, Bobby, Amanda, Melissa, Katie, Joey, Taylor, Courtney and Devin.
The family will receive visitors Friday, Aug. 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation will be private.
