Riverhead Town Police detectives have charged a 33 year-old Riverhead man with arson in connection with the fire yesterday morning at the Luz En Tu Senda church on Roanoke Avenue.
Surveillance cameras at the church captured images of an unknown man starting the fire, Riverhead police said in a press release.
Detectives later arrested Lee A. Ragland and charged him with Arson in the Third Degree.
The fire was reported to police at 2:22 a.m. Saturday. Responding officers found a working fire at the rear of the building.
Riverhead Fire Department responded quickly extinguished the flames but the fire did some interior damage to the church, police said.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Riverhead Town Police Detective Division at 631 727-4500 ext. 312. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
