Italo “Louie” Balacich of Southold died on Nov. 13, 2021. He was 87 years old.
He was born on Oct. 18, 1934 in Istria, Yugoslavia to Francesca (Micamcich) and John Balacich. He moved to the U.S. at the age of 13 and then lived in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Greenland. After his service, he worked for Con-Edison in Brooklyn until he retired in 1993.
His hobbies included bowling –he achieved a score of 299 and received numbers trophies, gardening, traveling and fishing.
His family said he “was a kind and gentle soul who will be greatly missed by many.”
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Elsie, stepchildren Ron Morizzo and Nancy Morizzo and brother Celio (Faye) of Staten Island.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, Nov. 17 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Graveside services with US Army Honors will be held on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery in Southold, officiated by Father John Barrett.
