Herbert James Adler Jr. died on Nov. 26, 2021 at his home in Southold. He was 98 years old.
He was born on Sept. 6, 1923 in New York City to Herbert and Rita (Rodenbeck) Adler. He attended school in Great Neck. He then pursued a chemical engineering degree at Yale University. He served in the U.S. Navy from July 1943 to April 1946. While working for Chemical Construction Corporation, he pursued a law degree at New York University and earned his LL.B. in 1951. He then worked for Chemical Construction Corporation as a corporate lawyer until his retirement.
He was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Southold where he served numerous terms on the governing board as well as on a variety of committees over the years. He was one of the founding members of the Southold Historical Society and served as president from 2014 to 2018. His hobbies included windsurfing, waterskiing, sailing, traveling to Europe, Asia and New Zealand, classical music and opera at the New York Metropolitan Opera House.
He is survived by his brother John Adler of Southold and Pine Knoll Shores, North Carolina.
Memorial donations may be sent to Southold Historical Society or First Presbyterian Church in Southold. A memorial service will be held during the summer of 2022.
