Joan A. Flanagan of Greenport and Southold, formerly of Plandome and Wilton, Connecticut, died on Jan. 14, 2022. She was 85 years old.  

She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1954. She then attained a bachelors from Hunter College in 1958 and a masters of fine arts from Adelphi University in 1977.  

She worked as an art teacher with Manhasset Public Schools until she retired. Her hobby was gardening.

Her family said she was “brilliant in mind, beautiful in body, generous, compassionate and loving in spirit.”

She was predeceased by her husband Robert F. and sister Barbara Trede. She is survived by her children of James and Jeffrey, brother John Larrere, grandchildren Lara, Melissa, Julie, Kathryn and Nicole and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 20 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Jan. 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold, officiated by Father John Barrett. Graveside services will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
