The Riverhead Fire Department is holding its annual fund drive. By now, the community should have received the brochure in the mail and return envelope to send a contribution allowing the firefighters to continue serving the community on a volunteer basis. The Riverhead Fire Department protects 48 square miles and covers the Town of Riverhead as well as parts of the towns of Southampton and Brookhaven. They are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, rain or shine. They look forward to teaching annually fire safety training to all the children in the district through their Fire Prevention Program at all the schools, as well as, many preschools. You can send a donation by check or money order to Riverhead Fire Dept Fund Drive Committee, 540 Roanoke Avenue, Riverhead, NY 11901 or can be made online by [email protected] or zelle [email protected]

The dedication of the Frank Corwin Lane grave marker, the first ever for an ex-chief of the Riverhead Fire Department, was held on Saturday, May 7 at the firehouse. Originally to be held at Riverhead Cemetery, it was moved indoors due to inclement weather.

Georgette Case, great-granddaughter of Frank Corwin Lane wrote a biography in 2010 about his activities and events that happened during his term as chief of the department and his life with his wife Rosabell. The book is titled “Frank Corwin Lane, A Born Leader.” It is available at Riverhead Free Library. He wanted to be a fireman like his father Francis, so at the age of 14 he joined the fire department where he served as foreman of the Red Jacket for seven years and later re-organized the fire company. After learning the rudiments of fighting fires with the Red Jackets, he then joined the Hook and Ladder Company. His fortitude and interest in the fire company was recognized by the members and he was elected foreman. He then was elected assistant chief of the department, serving for seven years. Then he was chosen as chief in 1897 and served for 19 years.

Georgette dedicated the beautiful Maltese Cross marker in his memory as the longest serving chief of the Riverhead Fire Department. It was a beautiful ceremony and Chief Joseph Hartmann had the honor of holding the trumpet used by Chief Lane during the presentation.
