An off-duty correction officer shot a man attempting to enter their home yesterday afternoon in Riverhead, according to Suffolk County Police.

Police said the man attempted to break into the deputy sheriff’s home on Maple Wood Lane yesterday at about 4 p.m. and “was confronted by residents who attempted to stop him from entering.”

The man continued to attempt to enter the home, police said, and the homeowner, an off-duty Suffolk County correction officer shot him once.

The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said.

Police did not identify the man who was shot or indicate whether his injuries were life-threatening. Police did not identify the deputy sheriff involved in the incident.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating, according to a press release issued this morning by Suffolk Police.

Correction: Suffolk County Police initially misidentified the involved officer as a deputy sheriff in a press release issued Thursday. The involved officer is a correction officer.

The gender of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s off-duty officer was not specified by police. We have changed the pronoun used to a gender-neutral pronoun until such time as further information is made available.
