A man driving a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck followed two Riverhead High School students as they were returning to school from a local restaurant yesterday afternoon and attempted to engage them in conversation.

The driver of the pickup stopped his vehicle before the students reached school grounds and asked the students for their social media profiles, Riverhead School Superintendent Augustine Tornatore said in a letter to the community posted on the district’s website. The students ignored the the driver and walked onto the high school grounds and into the building. They reported the incident to building administration and to district security, Tornatore said.

Riverhead Town Police were immediately notified and are currently investigating this incident, Tornatore said.

Riverhead Police Chief confirmed the incident report and provided the make, model and color of the truck. No license plate number was provided to police he said. The chief said the driver was an unknown male.

“Don’t accept rides from strangers and don’t talk to strangers,” Hegermiller said.

Tornatore said parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with their children about the importance of always traveling in groups when walking in town or anywhere off-campus.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Riverhead Police headquarters at 631-747-4500.
