Riverhead Town Police reported 228 criminal incidents and 141 arrests in August 2023, according to a monthly crime report released by Police Chief David Hegermiller this month.

The arrests made in August, according to the police chief’s report were for:

  • Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle (2)
  • Assault (1)
  • Burglary (1)
  • Criminal possession of a controlled substance (8)
  • Criminal possession of forged instrument (1)
  • Criminal possession of stolen property (4)
  • Criminal contempt (5)
  • Driving while ability impaired by drugs (2)
  • Driving while intoxicated (17)
  • Driving while intoxicated, under Leandra’s Law (1)
  • False personation (1)
  • Forcible touching (1)
  • Grand larceny (1)
  • Harassment (11)
  • Identity theft (3)
  • Larceny (1)
  • Petit larceny (22)
  • Rape (1)
  • Resisting arrest (1)
  • Town code violation (18)
  • Trespass (8)
  • Unlawful fleeing (1)
  • Warrant (29)

For reference, police reported 196 criminal incidents and 131 arrests in July. 

The Riverhead Police Department has changed its method of reporting arrests to comply with the Uniform Crime Reporting system. The new method counts every single crime charged during an arrest, rather than just the most serious charge, as was the department’s previous practice.

Due to the change, Hegermiller’s monthly report now provides both “arrests by number” and “arrests by subject.”

There were 118 individuals arrested in August — 138 adults and three juveniles — compared to 69 individuals arrested in August 2022, according to the report.

Out of the 118 individuals arrested, 61 were held for arraignment.

The town issued 1,099 summonses in August: 76 town code violations, 589 traffic tickets and 434 parking tickets.

There were 2,705 non-criminal incidents reported by police in August, including one fatal overdose.

Police reported 70 domestic incidents in August.
