Riverhead Police are investigating an armed robbery that took place on West Main Street Tuesday night and seeking witnesses to the crime.

Two men armed with a knife and a handgun demanded money from store employees and patrons at Demaris Multiservice, 953 West Main Street Tuesday night at about 8 p.m., according to a police press release. The men then fled on foot westbound on West Main Street, police said. Police said they were alerted to a robbery in progress by a 911 caller at 8:01 p.m.

An extensive search by patrol officers and the Riverhead Police Department’s K-9 unit was unfruitful, according to the release. The Riverhead Detective Division responded, processed the scene and now is investigating the incident further.

Police did not provide a physical description of the suspects except that victims stated the men “appeared to be of Hispanic descent.”

Any witnesses are urged to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500 or the Department’s Crime Hotline at 631-727-3333. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.
