Calverton Rail Spur contract awarded

by

Riverhead has awarded a $3.5 million contract to Railroad Construction Co., Inc. of Paterson, N.J., to refurbish the long-defunct rail spur that used to serve the old Grumman manufacturing plant in Calverton, the site of the Calverton Enterprise Park. The contract is funded by the state department of transportation with federal aid obtained by Rep. Tim Bishop last year.

The rail spur, which connects with the Greenport branch of the LIRR, will be used to transport freight in and out of the enterprise park, known as EPCAL. Its refurbishment has been cited by officials as essential for the full redevelopment of the site, which was transferred by the U.S. Navy to the town in 1998, two years after Northrup-Grumman, once the town's largest employer and taxpayer moved out.

Riverhead voters reject building referendum

by

Riverhead Central School District voters resoundingly rejected the district's $123 million building bond referendum Tuesday by a vote of 2,274 no to 1,385 yes. There were 176 absentee ballots cast, which are not reflected in the tally.

"We go back to the drawing board on the 23rd," district superintendent Diane Scricca said after the vote results were announced, referring to the date of the next Board of Education meeting. (See video below.)

The superintendent, board members and district staff made 30 presentations throughout the community to civic, service and PTO groups in an effort to sell the bond to voters.

"The board has to decide what they want to do in terms of the crumbllng buildings and not having good facilities for our children," she said. "It's a sad day for Riverhead."
