I've been on the fence about whether to be a regular blogger on RiverheadLOCAL.com. I love writing, and I always especially loved writing columns, but I'm very strapped for time these days.
It's ironic that the man who got me into writing opinion columns for Times/Review Newspapers — a decade-long pursuit — has now inspired me to write a column for RiverheadLOCAL: Troy Gustavson, the co-owner Times/Review Newspapers.
Troy wanted my voice in the The News-Review because he recognized the value of my local perspective. At the time, his Riverhead paper was being edited and written by people who didn't live in Riverhead. The same is true today. And, from time to time, it shows. Community journalism is a tough job. As Troy knows, there is no substitute for living in a community when you aim to be the authoritative news source in a community.
Troy Gustavson published a column in Riverhead's "hometown paper" last week that demonstrated just how out of touch the owner of The News-Review is with the Riverhead community. It's sort of understandable. He lives in Orient.
