Riverhead fire marshal

Lithium ion batteries from an e-bike shop that caught fire and led to the death of four people in New York City were transported and have been temporarily stored by a Manorville environmental contracting and remediation company.

The Riverhead Home Depot reopened for business this morning following a fire Monday that damaged its main entrance. That entrance is closed but the store opened using the building's other entrances.

A long-vacant house set back in the woods off Main Road in Riverhead was destroyed by a fire thought to be set by a downed tree pulling down power lines near the house, which was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters responded to a 2 a.m. call.

Riverhead should restore its third fire marshal position, cut in 2011, the town and county fire chiefs councils say. A fire prevention inspector is not enough.

The spilt oil discharged from a sump in the building into the parking lot storm drains, then percolated to the surface after heavy rains earlier this week, Riverhead Fire Marshal Craig Zitek said.
