Fifth annual Douglas Moore organ concert, May 14

The fifth annual Douglas Moore Organ Concert will be held on Saturday, May 14 at 3 p.m. at the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church. This year’s concert features up­-and-­coming Juilliard School students Patrick Kreeger and Daniel Ficarri.

Kreeger gave his Carnegie Hall debut recital at age 17, and enjoys a versatile career as both a pianist and organist. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Kreeger began his music studies on piano at age three. He began organ lessons at age 12 with Jim Wood. At age 18, he was was awarded a full scholarship to attend the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

Daniel Ficarri is a young, rising musician from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania studying at The Juilliard School with Grammy award ­winning organist Paul Jacobs. An engaging performer, Ficarri has appeared on WQXR, New York City’s classical music radio station, as part of an 18 ­hour marathon of the complete organ works of J.S. Bach. In addition, Ficarri was invited in 2014 and 2015 to perform for Lincoln Square’s Winter’s Eve Festival.

Composer Douglas Stuart Moore, for whom the Douglas Moore Concert Series is named, was born in Cutchogue in 1893. In addition to chairing the music department at Columbia University from 1940 to 1962, he was a Pulitzer prize­ winning composer of operas, most famous among them “The Ballad of Baby Doe” and “The Devil and Daniel Webster.”

Moore was an organist, and he was known to play the organ in the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church. He composed almost all of his music in a studio overlooking Downs Creek at his family’s home.
