A vehicle exiting the Long Island Expressway at exit 73 left the roadway, struck a pole and caught fire this evening.
The elderly male driver was able to get out of the vehicle and suffered no obvious injuries, according to police on the scene. He was transported for evaluation to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, police said.
The Subaru he was driving was fully engulfed in flames when Riverhead Fire Department arrived on scene. Responding firefighters extinguished the flames.
Eastbound traffic on the expressway was diverted at exit 72 while police cleared the accident scene, causing a traffic snarl at the start of the long holiday weekend.
