2013 1220 boys basketball tolliver

Riverhead’s boys basketball team lost more than just its third straight game of the league season on Thursday.

Following the 65-50 defeat to a 5-0 Newfield team, senior Brandon Tolliver took to Facebook to make an announcement.

“Honestly,” Tolliver wrote. “I’m sorry I’m not that leader that everyone expects me to be. I know I should be making sure everyone on the team is accountable for their actions including mine. I just wan’t y’all to know that I’m gonna step up vocally. I don’t know how bad this injury is but I’m praying that it doesn’t end my senior year playing ball with my bros.”

Tolliver, who had offseason reconstructive ACL surgery on his right knee, has injured his knee again. Only this time, it’s his left.

Asked how bad he thought it was through Facebook message, Tolliver began to type a response and then stopped. He typed again and erased it.

He then responded with, “I’m not sure. I can’t put a lot of pressure on it so I think it’s kind of bad.”

Tolliver said that he was going for a block when he collided knees with a defender before hitting the floor in pain.

Junior Ethan Greenidge chimed in on the Facebook post saying, “It’s ight brotha BUT it is not all on you cause in order for you to lead, we need to listen and that doesn’t happen to much on this team.. ur just a different type of leader that leads by energy on the court and playmaking and everyone thinks a leader is just vocal ill follow u all the way and ill be prayin for that knee.”

He’s not the only one praying.

Tolliver will wait and see how his knee feels tomorrow to decide whether or not he needs an MRI. He iced his knee for hours into the night saying that he’s been icing so long that his “whole leg feels numb.”

“I’m praying that I get to finish out my senior season,” he said.
