The Riverhead Tax Receiver’s office has a not-so-new face. Melissa Messina, who has been acting deputy tax receiver for the past year, has been officially appointed to the position.

Messina began working in the receiver’s office as an intern in 2011, when her youngest child began kindergarten.

“It was a very natural fit because, as a stay-at-home mother, I hadn’t been in the workforce for some time,” Messina said. “Working four months a year, during tax season, was a great way to get back into the field.”

Last year, she became the acting deputy tax receiver when the former deputy, Cori Fife, went on maternity leave. Fife made her leave permanent earlier this year, and that’s when Receiver of Taxes Laurie Zaneski decided to appoint Messina to the position.

“While on the job she just kept learning and learning and learning and getting better and better, so when Cori left I knew that she would be perfect,” Zaneski said. “And she has been.”

Messina’s appointment was formalized by resolution of the Riverhead Town Board this month.

The Receiver of Taxes office is responsible for collecting all county, town, school and special district taxes for property within the Town of Riverhead.
