The Jamesport Meeting House will hold its third annual Community Spelling Bee on Friday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m.
Last year’s competition drew 29 spellers, backed by more than 300 individual sponsors from throughout the North Fork.
Participants in the popular event, which is open to spellers of all ages, are asked to sign up sponsors among their friends, family members, classmates and business colleagues.
Click here for an entrance form or email a request. Those with questions may call a special spelling bee hotline at 631-722-0008.
Sponsorships for each speller should add up to a total of at least $50, with tax-free proceeds helping to restore and maintain the 285-year old building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the oldest public building on the East End. A special award will be given to the speller who gathers the most individual sponsorships.
“Gathering sponsors makes the evening a truly community affair,” said event chairman Steve Berger. “It also adds to the fun as sponsors turn out to cheer for their favorite spellers.”
There is no admission charge for spectators, and all are invited.
Jeff Greenberger, the Latin teacher at Riverhead High School, will conduct the competition.
