Danielle Doll hopes you’ll work up an appetite on June 29 and then come down to the riverfront to satisfy it.

That’s why she’s coordinating ‘Lunch on the Riverfront,’ the town recreation department’s newest program. “The riverfront park is being used more and more, but we are always looking for creative new ways to draw the community to it,” says Doll, the Cultural Affairs Supervisor for the Riverhead Town Recreation Department.

Doll hopes the event will become a monthly happening for the summer. The inaugural lunch is scheduled for June 29 from 12 to 2 p.m. and Doll sees it as a way for “people working downtown to get out of the office and into the fresh air for a bit – to enjoy some artwork, and listen to live music.” Music for this event will be by local favorites The Sunnyland Jazz Band. Future lunches will feature different genres of music and art.

Back in 2010, when Doll first worked for the department, she ran the same event and it was a great success. From June through September she arranged for a monthly pop-up art show and live music to entertain diners enjoying lunch at the picnic tables nearby.

When she left the department, the program died. But now that she’s back she’s very excited to be promoting it again by encouraging everyone to come enjoy beautiful scenery, music, art and some delicious food. This month the Suffolk County Historical Society will display photos of Riverhead of the past.

In the past, there was a standard rain date set for the day following the luncheon, should bad weather prevail. No date has been set this year, yet, but Doll is working on scheduling one. The inclement weather phone number is 727-5744 ext 30.

Reservations are required for the luncheon and must be made through the recreation department’s website. If you have never registered for a recreation department program, you must complete this form and return it in person to the recreation department office at 55 Columbus Avenue along with proof of residency (driver’s license, tax bill or utility bill.) Once you have an account, you can simply log in and follow the prompts to register for any program.

You are welcome to bring your own lunch and enjoy the music and art.

Editor’s note: This article was first published stating that  box lunches were available to order from Farm Country Kitchen through the recreation department. The rec department has changed that arrangement and is looking for another possible vendor.
