A Riverhead man is facing a gun charge after he was found to have a loaded Colt .45 handgun in his vehicle last night, Riverhead Police said.

Police responded to a report of a dispute and gunshots fired on Osborn Avenue last night at about 10 p.m.

Upon arrival officers were advised that a person in a white Chevy SUV had been in dispute with a cab driver and his passengers. While the SUV was leaving, several gunshots were fired from the vehicle, witnesses told police.

Police were able to locate a vehicle matching the description on Doctors Path.  The vehicle was being operated by Eric D. Ross, age 24, police said. An investigation led to the recovery of a loaded Colt .45 caliber handgun in the vehicle, according to the police report.

Ross was arrested and processed at Riverhead Police headquarters. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree for operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

Ross was arraigned today in Riverhead Justice Court and remanded to the Suffolk County jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
