The Blue Waves field hockey playoff run is over.

In the second round today, the Waves ran into a brick wall named Ward Melville. Riverhead fell to Ward Melville 6-1 at Ward Melville High School.

The Riverhead girls gave it everything they had against a team which was 16-0 overall. They tried their best to break through midfield many times but were stopped dead.

The Waves were down 6-0 in the second half but persisted and were beginning to penetrate. Sure enough, on the free-shot setup, the ball made its way to Shannon Schmidt, who beat the Ward Melville goalkeeper on the stick side from about 8 feet out for Riverhead’s only goal.

Correction: The Riverhead player who scored the Waves’ goal was misidentified in this story as it was originally published.
