Riverhead fell to Walt Whitman 52-35 yesterday at Riverhead High School.

Riverhead came out strong, keeping pace with Whitman and taking the lead at one point in the first half 17-16, amidst many turnovers by both squads. Riverhead ended the first half just one point down, 18-17.

But a lackluster second half proved to be Riverhead’s downfall, as Whitman (6-0 overall, 2-0 in League II) came out shooting, sinking baskets from all over the court and outscoring the Waves 34-18.

Riverhead (1-4 overall, 0-2 in League II) turned over the ball numerous times, missed many good opportunities at the free throw line, and squandered away what could have been a possible win.

Riverhead’s next home game is a non-league game against Centereach (0-7, 0-2 in League III) on Wednesday, Dec. 28. Game time: 12 noon.
