Work has gotten underway on the Route 24 traffic circle reconstruction project.
Workers have begun to move utilities, South Fork County Legislator Bridget Fleming said yesterday.
“The actual ground-breaking is scheduled to begin at the end of this month,” Fleming said.
The $4 million project will enlarge and modernize the traffic circle to a two-lane rotary and improve the access points with the aim of improving traffic flow in the congested area near the county office complex and Riverhead’s Main Street business district. Its completion is incorporated into revitalization plans for Riverside which have been set in motion by the Town of Southampton with the adoption of new zoning for the area and grant applications to fund the revitalization effort.
Completion of the project will take 18 months to two years, the legislator said in a phone interview.
“Contractors will be working at night to reduce road closures as much as possible,” Fleming said.
